Summary

EU4Climate is the initiative of the European Union to support six EU Eastern Partnership countries – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine - to implement the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, improve climate policies and legislation, and reduce the impact of climate change on people’s lives. Working closely with national governments in all six countries, the EU4Climate project aims to contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation, and foster development towards a low-emission and climate-resilient economy.

Funded by the European Union, the EU4Climate project is being implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) based on the agreements with the national governments in all six countries.

Activities

The EU4Climate project assists Georgia to fulfil its international commitments in the field of environment and climate. It helps the Government of Georgia to finalise and update Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement and national strategies on the implementation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and establish a system of measurement, reporting and verification to keep Georgia on track to meet the Paris Agreement goals.

EU4Climate builds on the achievements of the past cooperation programmes in the Eastern Neighbourhood, such as the EU ClimaEast Programme, which supported climate change mitigation and adaptation in 2013-2017 and assisted the rehabilitation of degraded pastures in the Vashlovani Protected Areas in Georgia.

Expected results

  • Finalized/up-dated nationally determined contributions and national mid-century strategies and communicated to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
  • Improved inter-institutional awareness and coordination at political and technical level of the Paris Agreement and the corresponding national commitments.
  • Established or strengthened measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) systems, with countries getting on track with Paris Agreement transparency requirements.
  • Establishment of concrete sectoral guidelines for the implementation of the Paris Agreement in each of the Eastern Partners, especially in the field of energy.
