Summary

Under the European Union Eastern Partnership Flagship, this initiative is part of the European Union’s assistance to the South Caucasus countries in introducing the principles of Integrated Border Management. It is funded by the European Union and Government of Georgia, and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The project aims to improve operational performance of the Azerbaijan and Georgia border management agencies, promote cooperation between the two countries, equip the Red Bridge Border Crossing Point and increase operational capacities and professional qualifications of border guards in both countries.

Activities

The Red Bridge project was launched in February 2016 with the aim to support the Governments of Azerbaijan and Georgia in securing their borders and facilitating legal passing of persons and goods at the Red Bridge Border Crossing Point (BCP).

Partners and beneficiaries of the project are institutions responsible of customs control and phyto-sanitary and veterinary checks at the border - the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan and the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia.

The project focuses on improving phyto-sanitary and veterinary control standards on the crossing point by providing trainings for the staff of the crossing point as well as developing the necessary infrastructure and equipment on both sides, namely a secured customs area in Azerbaijan and control facilities in Georgia, including sampling equipment for probing goods and livestock. As an effect, the Red Bridge Crossing Point will meet international standard in this regard.

Specific objectives of the project are to support institutional development and build capacity of the border management agencies in Azerbaijan and Georgia. This specifically includes building capacities to carry out phyto-sanitary and veterinary control, and exchange information as appropriate. In addition, the European Union and UNDP support the complete renovation of infrastructure and technological upgrade of the Red Bridge Border Crossing Point to ensure enabling environment for modern border management in compliance with the European Union standards.
