How to increase engagement of Georgia’s population in sports and physical activities?

October 20, 2020

Lack of physical and sporting activity among the population of Georgia costs the country more than GEL 16.8 million every year. Research shows that 82.4 percent of Georgians aged 18-69 (72.2 percent of men and 91.8 percent of women) do not regularly engage in physical activities (Non-Communicable Diseases Risk-factor STEPS Survey, 2016) and only 20 percent of schoolchildren are enrolled in sports sections or clubs.

A thematic inquiry of the Parliamentary Committee for Youth and Sports reveals the factors contributing to low physical and sporting activity in Georgia and examines the legislative ways of addressing this challenge.

The report was prepared by the Committee on Sports and Youth Affairs of the Parliament of Georgia, with the support from the European Union (EU), UNDP and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD).
