The report describes current legislative framework and practice in Georgia concerning the access of legal aid during plea bargaining. While Legal Aid Service (LAS) is currently under duty to provide mandatory legal aid to all defendants involved in plea bargaining negotiations, this places excessive burden on LAS, which has limited resources. The report recommends several options to limit LAS representation only to socially vulnerable defendants.
