Labor market segmentation and informal labor during crisis. 2020

Analytical research provides insights on formal and informal employment in Georgia and examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and other economic and social crises on the labour market.

Key conclusions:

  • The pandemic is expected to increase unemployment and deepen the segmentation of formal and informal employment in Georgia.
  • Women and rural population are at a higher risk of losing their jobs amid the cirisis.
  • The following sectors of the economy will be affected most: processing, construction, wholesale/retail trade, transportation, shipping and storage, hospitality (hotels and restaurants).

The study was commissioned by the Norwegian Government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and carried out in June-July 2020 by the Human Rights Education and Monitoring Center (EMC).
