Determining the national requirements and needs for the ratification of the Minamata Convention

Summary

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Global Environment Facility (GEF) assist the Government of Georgia to undertake an initial assessment of Mercury, determine the national requirements and needs for the ratification of the Minamata Convention and establish a national foundation for its implementation.

Activities

In close cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia and other stakeholders, UNDP works to:

Assist the country to assure that Georgia meets vital preconditions of the ratification and implemetation of the Minamata Convention, such as: the operational national decision making mechanism; assessment of policy and regulatory framework and institutional and capacity needs; and raised awareness on the environmental and health impacts of Mercury
Assist the country to develop “National Mercury Profile and Mercury Initial Assessment Report”

Results so far

The National Inventory of Mercury carried out in 2016 and 2017
The assessment of the policy/regulatory and institutional frameworks for the ratification and implementation of the Minamata Convention
The information campaign implemented in 2017 to raise public awareness about the adverse effects of Mercury
