The state national statistics office of Georgia, GEOSTAT, is developing its 2020-2023 Strategy and National Plan aiming to advance its work and provide high-quality, reliable and objective statistics for Georgia. The development of the GEOSTAT Strategy and Action Plan is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Sweden and is coordinated by the Inter-Agency Council created by the decree of the Government of Georgia.

The first meeting of the Inter-Agency Council on 4 July 2019 brought together representatives of the Georgian Government and the invited international and national experts.

Gogita Todradze, GEOSTAT Executive Director and the Inter-Agency Council Chairperson, addressed the participants of the event with welcome remarks.

Members of the Inter-Agency Council discussed the challenges and prospects associated with the strategy development process.

International experts, Alper Gujumengil and Jerry O'Hanlon, briefed the Council members about the concept and implementation of the strategy as well as about the recommendations of the Global Assessment of the Statistical System carried out by the Eurostat, UN Economic Cooperation for Europe (UNECE) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) in 2018-2019.

The meeting closed with a discussion about the concrete steps to be undertaken by the GEOSTAT to promote and advance the national statistical system in Georgia.
