UNDP supports the Government of Georgia in securing a long-term financial sustainability of the Protected Areas system. We address the challenges of insufficient and unpredictable revenue sources, poor business planning and ineffective site management. The project is undertaken in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, the Agency of Protected Areas and the Caucasus Nature Fund.

What We Do

In close cooperation with the Global Environment Facility, we support four Protected Areas in Georgia: Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, Lagodekhi, Tusheti and Vashlovani Protected Areas. Our assistance includes:

  • providing equipment (computers, cameras, binoculars and saddles for horses) and administering salary supplements for rangers and other personnel;
  • promoting environmental tourism programmes, monitoring and public education activities;
  • supporting small infrastructure projects, such as building and trail maintenance, but also the construction of small facilities such as ranger or tourist shelters.

Some results so far

Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park:

  • A three-year pilot project to renovate the administration and visitors center premises;
  • equipment of the ranger service with cell phones and camera traps for biodiversity monitoring.

Lagodekhi Protected Area:

  • Refurbishment of the visitor’s center.

Tusheti Protected Area:

  • Infrastructure projects;
  • ecotourism programmes.

Vashlovani Protected Area:

  • Infrastructure projects;
